May Day Trek 2011

The annual May Day Trek has come round again!  as part of our celebrations to mark the 50th Anniversary of CAFOD supporters are encouraged to join us on the May Day Trek for a pilgrimage of solidarity.  If you wish, you can choose to walk with a group who will be carrying the cross of St Cuthbert as a reminder of the legacy of our Northern Saints, who taught us much about helping others through sacrifice and contemplation.

Pilgrimage is an opportunity to engage with our spirituality and focus on the presence of God in our lives. It’s also a chance to think about our sisters and brothers in the global south, many of whom have to walk long distances each day for water.

Walkers will be invited to reflect on the impact which fundraising is having on the lives of people around the world.  This year the walk starts and finishes at Bolsterstone Village Hall and offers the usual choice of 5, 10 and 15 mile circular walks around the Broomhead and More Hall Reservoirs—Sheffield’s own water supply- onto the spectacular moors south of Bolsterstone. Maps and full route descriptions are available on the website at

CAFOD and Christian Aid organise this annual local event together as both are committed to the eradication of poverty.  CAFOD works to reduce poverty and to enhance dignity, because despite their best efforts millions of people in poor countries continue to struggle to make a life for themselves and their families, and many lack the most basic needs.  In 2010 our sponsored walkers raised more than £2,500 for CAFOD’s water projects.  This year we would like to raise even more for water – so can you join the trek and help us?

The trek starts and ends at Bolsterstone Village Hall.  Registration is from 9.30 am to 10.30 am in the village hall.  The first walkers off at 10 am, walkers can set off  up to 10.40 am.  The walk is led by Walk Guides and fully covered by marshals.  The 5-mile walk is suitable for families with small children but not for pushchairs.  Refreshments will be available at the event venue and along the routes.

To take part please obtain your enrolement and sponsor forms in advance.  You can contact CAFOD Hallam on 0114 2687817, email, or download an enrolment form from

If you are not able to take part in the walk yourself please consider sponsoring a member of your parish or a local CAFOD volunteer by telephoning the CAFOD office on 0114 2687817.  Every step we take together will ensure that CAFOD can continue vital, long-term development work in some of the world’s poorest ent work in some of the world’s poorest communities.
