My inspiration for walking? Experience, the generosity of parishioners and a very nice pub…

Hot on the heels of Jean-Luc’s wonderful story two weeks ago, my dad, David Wood – another of the hard-walking recipients of a CAFOD water bottle – has written to the office about what inspires him to take part in the May Day Trek. I am sure that the third of his motivations will resonate with a few of you…

“My initial inspiration for undertaking the May Day Trek comes from being a member of a CAFOD orientated household. My wife has been a very active supporter since returning from her years of voluntary work in Kenya before we were married, and my daughter now works for CAFOD. Two years ago I came to appreciate at first hand the value of the work done by this organisation when Angela and I went to Kenya and were privileged to visit one of the projects supported by CAFOD. I do have to say it was momentarily  disconcerting to be in a tiny office of a clinic in Mombasa to turn round a see a picture of our own Bishop John looking down at me:  in the footsteps of the great!

“My second incentive was fuelled by being the parish representative on the walk – no pressure there then!! – and so I have to say a big thank you to all the people who sponsored me so generously and provided me with the will to finish!

“A final spur to complete the trek is the presence of a very nice pub in the village!”

The pub in question is in Bolsterstone village, near Stocksbridge, where our annual May Day Trek begins and ends. Hope this has inspired you to join us in May! My Dad will be leading the post-walk amble to the bar…
