Sheffield Hallam University goes Bananas

As part of Fairtrade Fortnight CAFOD Hallam created and staffed a campaign stall calling on all staff and students to add their voices to the Fairtrade Campaign ‘Stick with Foncho’ calling on a fairer deal for banana growers. As there was a very strong link to the Hungry4Change campaign resources relating to this campaign were also displayed and discussed. The stall was staffed over the lunchtime period Tues 4th – 6th March by our volunteers including two of our young volunteers, Lyndon and Will. In fact Will staffed the stall and campaigned on these issues on his 21st birthday!

Staff and students were called upon to gain an understanding of the issues highlighted and then asked to complete campaign cards for both the ‘Stick with Foncho’ and the ‘Hungry4Change’ campaigns. Over 40 of the Fairtrade cards were completed following discussion on the price war relating to bananas which inevitably leads to the growers not receiving a fair price for their produce.
