Session 3 of this years Young Volunteers programme took place at All Saints school on Wednesday 30th April. 6th formers from All Saints, Sheffield and The McAuley School Doncaster joined members of CAFOD’s team of volunteers to explore CAFOD’s work, especially campaigning, with a look forward to the Climate Coalition campaign ‘For the love of….’. Former members of this programme Molly, Will and Alexi, who now volunteer regularly for CAFOD both locally and nationally, told the group why they feel called to campaign for those who live in the poorest communities of the world especially those affected by the effects of the changing climate. The session was very inspiring and informative with some of the volunteers on the current programme saying they were looking forward to getting involved following the launch in September. In the meantime all the young people who were in attendance signed up to be MP correspondents and said they will encourage their friends to do the same.
The other focus of the afternoon was the use of media in our work. In particular, the rapid spread and wide reach of social media makes it an excellent resource for CAFOD’s work. Liam Finn (External Communications Schools Officer) from Romero House kindly came up from London to be our ‘media guru’ for the day and delivered some media training with the group. He gave us tips on how to get our ‘message across’ if we have the opportunity to give a TV or radio interview and had us practicing on one another. He also made us aware of how extensively and effectively we can use social media in our work whilst also steering us away from its pitfalls. A big thank you goes to Liam for coming up to Sheffield for the afternoon and he told us ‘I really enjoyed it and I’m always inspired by enthusiasm’.
